Search for a Swan Marker – UK Ceremony 7pm, Saturday
The Queen herself hosts the latest in the stream of reality tv/talent shows as she continues her search for a new Swan Marker to represent her in the annual Swan Upping ceremony – the census of the Queen’s Mute Swans on the Thames. Regular viewers – and I am sure a few villagers – will know that this role was created in 1993 when the ancient post of the Keeper of the Swans (which dated from the 13th century) was replaced by two new posts – the Swan Marker – and the Warden of the Swans.
We are down to the last eight finalists, and the tasks set by the Queen become even tougher – can the contestants ‘up’ a grebe and daub a coot with a highlighter pen? Is the bookies favourite Derek Swazbourne up to the task? Luckily Steven the Swan is on the panel and always on hand to keep the last eight’s feet on the ground with his own brand of caustic comments
Villagers might also like to know that SfaSM is being shown ‘live’ on a big screen at The Swan on Saturday night.
